I wonder if the poster powers that be realized the monster they were creating when they whipped up that memorable poster for The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Since Steve Carell's virginal, bright smile graced walls and billboards everywhere, tons of comedies have followed suit, throwing up their takes on the one-face, and Pineapple Express is no exception.
Following the trio poster Jessica posted about in April, Trailer Addict has premiered two new posters, one highlighting Seth Rogen's happily high face, and the other showcasing James Franco's verrrry happy high face. You can see both above, and click to check out larger versions over at TA. They're cute, but man, I hope this trend ends before a really great movie gets burned by the annoyance brought on by a repetitive poster.
Luckily, nothing has deterred me from Pineapple Express yet. 38 days to go until we get lots of stoner action set to the tune of Huey Lewis!
On the final episode of Dinner for Five, Jon Favreau and guests discussed the legendary "is" credit. The only person at the table to have received an "is" credit in his lifetime was, surprisingly, Peter Billingsley, who was given an "is" credit for The Dirt Bike Kid. The "is" credit is indeed rare, so when it comes along we must congratulate the actor or actress enjoying this royal honor. And, as you can see above, Hollywood has given out another "is" credit, and it's gone to ... Seth Rogen.
Yes, ladies and gentlemen ... Seth Rogen is The Green Hornet. Sony has established a teaser site for the previously-announced film, which comes with a nice shade of green and a release date of June 25, 2010. Still a far way to go, but I'm sure it will be well worth the wait. Rogen will play newspaper publisher Britt Reid, who, at night, fights crime as a masked superhero known as The Green Hornet with Kato, a martial arts expert, at his side. This version of GH was written by Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Superbad, Pineapple Express), and there's no director currently attached.
Kevin Smith's latest, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, is apparently having trouble securing an R rating from the MPAA, sending star Seth Rogen on the obligatory rant about how the MPAA cracks down on sex while giving virtually all violence a pass. You can check out his full comments at MTV if you like, and no prizes for guessing which torture-happy recent horror franchise he cites as an example of what the MPAA should be targeting instead of pestering his movie. The tongue-halfway-in-cheek kicker from Rogen: "The MPAA? It's my mission to sue the MPAA and take them down. I don't know how to go about doing that. But to me, it seems like it's something that has to be taken care of."
I'm in the camp that thinks the problem lies less in the MPAA's attitudes toward "objectionable" content and more in the stigma placed on the NC-17. For a movie whose marketing campaign has consisted of cheerfully courting controversy -- check out the hilarious teaser if you don't believe me -- it's a bit disappointing that Zack and Miri doesn't run with the harsher rating. The asinine restrictions on advertising that accompany the NC-17 stamp would be a bummer, but the blogs and magazines would go nuts, and I think the movie would do pretty well.
Do watch that teaser (which had MPAA issues of its own) if you haven't already. Among other things, it will make you fall in love with Elizabeth Banks. Uh, if you haven't already.
We've talked about the next Judd Apatow-helmed flick, Funny People, and how one of that film's stars, Eric Bana, is not exactly the kind of guy you picture in an Apatow comedy. Especially when his co-stars are people like Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill and Jason Schwartzman. You might say, "Is Bana playing the evil villain who never cracks a smile?" And I wouldn't blame you for thinking that, because if you're not from Australia or familiar with Bana's early work, you wouldn't know that he used to be a stand-up comedian and starred in a very popular sketch comedy series called Full Frontal.
So, for some this might be a nice, refreshing blast from the past. For others, well, welcome to the comedic side of Eric Bana. There's a bunch of other Full Frontalclips on YouTube in case you're interested in watching Bana take on the funny.
About a year ago, a goofy trailer for what appeared to be a comedy short film appeared on YouTube. The movie it advertised was called Jay and Seth vs. the Apocalypse, and it starred Undeclared buds Jay Baruchel and Seth Rogen as two schlubby guys dealing with a world ravaged by some sort of civilization-ending catastrophe. (You can still see the trailer here, though now I suspect it may disappear soon.) As best I can determine, the actual short film was never made available for public consumption, and maybe this is why: Mandate Pictures has bought the rights to make the short into a feature film with Rogen and Baruchel, to be shot next year.
The short was written by Rogen and Evan Goldberg who, of course, collaborated to bring us last year's Superbad. They'll be writing and producing the feature too, though no director is yet attached. (Judd Apatow's name is nowhere mentioned, and after seeing You Don't Mess with the Zohan, I kind of think it's just as well.) I wonder if this is something else the two cooked up as teenagers and are now seizing the opportunity to realize. It worked out pretty well last time.
The trailer is moderately funny, though you should probably use headphones if you're at work, or around kids, or something. The jokes aren't brilliant, but Rogen's delivery brings them pretty close.
I love a surprise, even a small one like finding out that Kung Fu Panda was more likeable and fun than I might have expected. I have a secret mini-crush on Jack Black (okay, maybe not so secret), so I was hoping that Kung Fu Panda wouldn't suck and if nothing else, I'd be able to enjoy his vocal stylings in the Dreamworks animated film. Surprise! I liked the movie for more reasons than Jack Black.
Black voices the title character, Po, who helps in his father's noodle shop but dreams of becoming a kung fu fighter and joining the Furious Five: Monkey (Jackie Chan), Viper (Lucy Liu), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Crane (David Cross) and especially Tigress (Angelina Jolie). He wants to watch the Five compete to be the great Dragon Warrior, and is somehow dragged into the selection process himself. Kung-fu master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) is irritated that a fat clumsy clown of a panda is joining his elite cadre of students, especially since it's predicted that the supremely evil snow leopard Tai Lung (Ian McShane) may escape from prison and try to steal the Dragon Warrior scroll of power for himself.
It is indeed happening. Entertainment Weekly has reported that Seth Rogen's Green Hornet movie has the go-ahead, even down to its release date: June 25th, 2010.
Rogen is still set to star as Britt Reid, the bored newspaper publisher by day, crimefighter by night. He is also still writing the script with his partner, Evan Goldberg. But no director has yet been named, nor has Kato been cast. (If you remember, Rogen favors Stephen Chow. Sounds like he still does.)
Rogen's attachment to the project was reported a year ago, but given how many Green Hornet movies have fallen apart, I don't think anyone was holding their breath. Were they? I mean, this was once a property attached to everyone from George Clooney to Jake Gyllenhaal. Kevin Smith spent years trying to develop it. Who knew Rogen would be the one to finally do it?
This news comes on the heels of CHUD's brief chat with Rogen, where he was saying the film still hadn't been green lit. He discussed the tone they were trying to set with the film -- it isn't going to be bumbling humor, and it will feature some serious action. Rogen and Goldberg are hoping the comedy comes from the unconventional relationship between the Hornet and Kato. Perhaps that will soothe the doubts of our readers, who were quite furious when the news broke. Have you become more reconciled to it, or are you still wishing for what could have been?
When you look at Eric Bana's resume in Hollywood, you probably wouldn't expect him to show up in a big, splashy comedy. But, back home in Australia, Bana was known for the funny; he's just never had the chance to show it stateside ... until now. CHUD reports that Bana is in talks with Judd Apatow to star in the Untitled Judd Apatow/Adam Sandler Project. According to CHUD's source, Bana would play boyfriend to Leslie Mann.
Just a few days ago, Eugene brought us our first glimpse of the film's plot. Now we know that the flick will focus on the world of stand-up comedians (and for some reason, all I can think of now is Punchline ... but with stand-ups who are actually funny). The project had been on our radar since March, but beyond the good news that Apatow was actually going to direct this time, there wasn't much to report.
Bana is currently wrapping up work on Star Trek and the romantic weepy, The Time Traveler's Wife, before heading off to his next couple of projects. First up is the animated story, Mary and Max, about the friendship between a young girl and a recluse. Then he'll star alongside Terrence Howard in Factor X, a thriller about the BTK killer. At this point I'm starting to hope these Apatow rumors are true, because it looks like Bana could use a laugh.
The Untitled Judd Apatow/Adam Sandler Project is expected to arrive in theaters (with or without Bana) on July 31, 2009.
Immediately after watching what appeared to be a last second decision gone awry, I knew people would be talking about it the next day -- especially because it's MTV, because it's a show designed for teens and pre-teens and because Seth Rogen and James Franco kinda made pot smoking "look cool." In an article over at AOL News, Franco admitted that MTV put them up to it -- "even supplying the script, the fake marijuana and the fake joint - then had a last-second change of heart about the bit." That "change of heart" turned into the camera remaining on a wide shot of the stage while Rogen and Franco took hits off the fake joint, coughing in between. Of course, even though the camera was wide, we still heard everything being said -- and could still see the awkward, uncomfortable faces in the crowd, some of whom (like Will Smith) brought their young children with them as dates.
From the article: "MTV wrote it! ... Then backstage there was this big commotion: 'You guys can't say that,"' Franco said. "It says right in the script: 'Lights fake joint."' Of course, this shouldn't take anything away from The Pineapple Express (which I heard was absolutely hysterical and am dying to see), because it's rated R and doesn't pretend to be something it's not. However, the film's green band trailer makes sure not to use the word marijuana or show either character actually putting a joint to their mouth to smoke (going so far as to change the word 'weed' in the trailer song to 'seed') -- so, obviously, it's an issue with the MPAA.
Should it be an issue with the FCC? Did MTV make a huge mistake with this bit, or should they be applauded for taking the comedic risk? (Check out the video after the jump and let us know ...)
While the 2008 MTV Movie Awards was probably more like one long commercial for summer movies than it was an actual awards show, there were some funny, memorable bits featuring old friends and a few clips worth mentioning for those who missed it last night. (Anyone else catch Brendan Fraser screaming like a lunatic into the camera on the red carpet, promoting Journey 3-D, while they were interviewing SJP about Sex and the City? I mean, dude, I know this show is all about promoting your movies, but calm the F down -- even SJP looked a tad freaked out.)
But anyway, my favorite bit of the night was a tie between watching a Wayne's World reunion and the Tropic Thunder viral spoof by Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black. Surprisingly, it wasn't even any of the three who stole the show; it was, instead, the kid playing Stiller's nephew. Hilarious. I'd like to think the bit would've been funnier if the cameras were actually allowed within 700 feet of the stage and they didn't cutaway to several different actors who weren't laughing ... at all. In fact, Downey Jr. looked kind of insulted. Not the best anti-drug advertisement I've ever seen, but what the hey ...
"The second one's gonna be f**kin' badass!"-- Megan Fox on Transformers 2
The 2008 MTV Movie Awards are in the books and Transformers came out on top with the best movie award, with director Michael Bay and an unbelievably hot (seriously -- no one should be that good looking) Megan Fox accepting the honors. Bay, who was sitting next to his own Fox all night, looked happy up there at the podium -- and if it was possible to make love to yourself on live television, we probably would've seen something nasty.
Highlights for me this year include a very funny Wayne's World reunion, in which the boys counted down the top ten porn names for 2008 films (even though half the flicks mentioned came out in 2007). Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. cracked me up big time with their Tropic Thunder viral video bit, which concluded with them blowing up Black's head in order to impress Stiller's overweight, internet nerdy nephew. (Loved the line about Iron Man: "It'll do till The Dark Knight gets here." Classic!)
Myers was a decent host; liked the animal trainer bit; was iffy on the craft services chick. How odd was that gum commercial/sketch with the award rolling around in the bathroom? Thought the Sandler tribute was cute, though most of the intro jokes fell flat. (I love Seth Rogen and James Franco, but that pot bit tanked hard. Did you see the uncomfortable looks from the audience? And what was up with the wide shot for the entire bit, this way no one at home could actually see what was happening on stage?) Oh, and I willadmit -- the kiss from Step Up 2 the Streetswas kinda hot. Step Up 3 Way ... anyone? J/K!!

And by "Judd Apatow's" I mean "directed by Judd Apatow," not "containing Judd Apatow's name buried somewhere in the credits." We wrote about Untitled Judd Apatow/Adam Sandler project back in March, when all we knew was that Apatow would be collaborating with Sandler on a movie also starring best bud Seth Rogen and wife Leslie Mann (Sandler, of course, is a former roommate). This week, Rogen revealed to MTV that the movie will be a dramedy with him and Sandler playing a pair of stand-up comics, and Sandler confirmed, expressing mock frustration that he's going to have to come up with an act -- something he hasn't done in a decade -- to promote the film next year.
Apatow was a stand-up comic himself in his pre-television days, so I'm sure he has some insight into what I've always thought must be one of the most nerve-wracking jobs imaginable. I think Sandler brings a lot of baggage to the Apatow brand, since Sandler movies have traditionally targeted a very different audience. Next weekend's You Don't Mess with the Zohan, produced and co-written by Apatow, looks like it's being perceived as a "Sandler film." If Apatow wants to bring his fans from The 40-Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up back to the theater, his minions are going to have to be very careful marketing the new film. Though, if you can get the Apatow fans and the Sandler fans to show up...

The first teaser for Kevin Smith's new comedy Zack and Miri Make a Porno will premiere online tonight at Midnight PST (3am EST). To see the trailer, head on over to QuickStopEntertainment and Kevin will unveil it right on time, we assume. But don't worry about this teaser spoiling anything; giving away scenes or ruining the film's best jokes. Over on his site, Smith says, "Don't call it a trailer, 'cause it's not a trailer; it's a teaser. There ain't a frame of footage in this puppy that's in the actual flick, so feel free to watch it without fear of "spoilers". This is just a little something to give you a bit of a feel for the flick."
The film, due out in theaters on October 31, follows two platonic friends (Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks) who, hard up for cash, decide to make a porno together. We imagine some trademark Kevin Smith hilarity will ensue. So there you have it. The first teaser for Zack and Miri Make a Porno will debut online tonight at midnight (on the west coast) right over here.
Having finished his porno, Seth Rogen is now getting ready for that mall cop movie I told you about back in March, Observe and Report. The actor will star as Ronnie Barnhardt, "a deluded, self-important head of mall security who squares off in a turf war against the local cops." This is a whole different project than Mall Cop, which has Kevin James facing a collection of thieves, and that makes it all the better.
The Hollywood Reporter now posts that Rogen will be joined by Anna Faris, Michael Pena, Jesse Plemons, and Ray Liotta. Faris gets to play a salesgirl at the mall that Ronnie lusts after, while Pena gets to put aside some of his meaty roles in films like Crash and Lions for Lambs and get funny as Ronnie's right-hand security man, and Plemons plays another mall guard. Liotta, meanwhile, will play Ronnie's nemesis, a police detective. There is, however, no word who will be fighting with the cop on his side of the turf war.
Even though there is no La Fours in sight, nor any flying fatasses, I think this, along with Zack and Miri, will be good for Rogen's career. Whether Judd Apatow continues his reign of comedy or not, Rogen should have a healthy selection of non-Judd work. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if this film has at least a few brief cameos by some of Rogen's previous co-stars. Production begins this week.
Why We Can't Wait to See It: It's a fresh, yet classic stoner story written by Seth Rogen, Judd Apatow, and Evan Goldberg. The trailer looks funnier than hell, there's 227 references, and Huey frickin' Lewis wrote the theme song. Also, Rogen gets to not only fly through the air, but also carry James Franco out of a burning building all action hero-style.
Why It Might Do Well: Between The 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, and Superbad, Seth Rogen has been comedy gold lately. At the very least, the movie will get the loyal Judd Apatow contingent, along with those curious to see what David Gordon Green can do with comedy.
Why It Might Not Do Well: Aliens land on earth and the world ends. Realistically, it should do quite well, but it won't get as many young girls and action-hungry mens seeing it -- both Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 and Hell Ride open on the same day.
Fun Fact: The chorus of Huey Lewis' theme song for the film: "We got in trouble, we got to get out of here. I've got you, you've got me. We are as high as we can be. That's all right. How did we get into this mess? Pineapple Express!"
