Cult Hit of 2008? 'Machine Girl' Trailer Arrives

If you thought Rose McGowan with the machine gun leg was something else, just wait till you feast your eyes on The Machine Girl! Yes, that's right: A sweet Japanese teenage lass has been damaged beyond repair by the evil Yakuza, but with the help of a stump-mounted machine gun (and a whole bunch of other freaky weapons), this gal's gonna have her revenge! And how!

If you have a strict aversion to over-the-top arterial sprays and hardcore gore, then definitely don't check out this brand-new Machine Girl trailer over at Twitch.com. Anyone else should feel free to enjoy the Asian insanity. According to the Twitchers (and they know their Asian genre fare, trust me), The Machine Girl comes from the folks responsible for Death Trance (which I haven't seen) and Meatball Machine (which is certifiably bizarre), plus the trailer certainly looks chock-full of over-the-top chop-socky. Spidey 3 Trailer with Japanese Subtitles and New Footage!

If you ask anyone which film their anticipating the most in 2007, chances are Spider-Man 3 will pop up somewhere on their list. Fans of the webbed superhero have been waiting for some time to see Venom finally make an appearance, as well as that evil black suit, and from what we've seen of Thomas Haden Church as Sandman -- not to mention an appearance by the Green Goblin Jr. -- this puppy looks pretty bad ass.

Well, a brand new Japanese trailer for Spider-Man 3 has just hit the net, complete with Japanese subtitles and a couple new clips that primarily revolve around Harry's (James Franco) Goblin transformation. So, if you're at all wondering how Harry takes over for Daddy Goblin, then you might want to check this sucker out. The only thing I'm skeptical about when it comes to Spider-Man 3 is whether or not there are too many new characters -- complete with new battles -- for one film? Will it be Spidey overload? Or will Sam Raimi find a way to weave each subplot into a coherent story, ultimately bringing the Maguire Trilogy (a term I'm using to describe the first three because I doubt Toby will return for a fourth adventure, though I'm certain the franchise will continue) to a satisfying conclusion? Spider-Man 3 officially swings into theaters on May 4.

What are your thoughts on the third film? Too much or just the right amount?

Weinstein Co. Makes a Deal For Nightmare Detective

Back when the Weinstein brothers were still the "Kings" of Miramax, they garnered the reputation of being able to pick some of the most successful foreign films for North American distribution. As a result, they managed to subsequently release some of the most successful foreign films of the last decade, including Life is Beautiful and Princess Mononoke. They might not be making deals for Miramax anymore, but The Weinstein Co. is sticking to the tradition of bringing international films to domestic audiences.

The Hollywood Reporter announced that TWC have bought the Japanese thriller Nightmare Detective for US and UK distribution. Nightmare Detective was written and directed by Shinya Tsukamoto, and stars Ryuhei Matsuda and Japanese Pop singer hitomi. The story centers on a female detective investigating two seemingly unrelated suicides. The spooky factor kicks in when there is one strange detail both deaths have in common -- and that's that the victims each dialed 0 on their cell phones moments before their death.

A deal was struck between Easternlight Films and TWC (who have had a long-standing relationship with each other), and negotiations started not long after the film screened at the Rome film festival. The film hasn't even opened in Japan yet, but is slated for a January release. No word yet on when the US release date will be, but I doubt TWC will waste much time.
