3. For the record, I think this whole True Grit remake is a bad idea, but given the casting choices so far and the more than able hands of the Coens...it gets a pass. :)

4. Coincidentally, I reread TRUE GRIT this year, also watched the original movie. I realized that the book really deserved a new movie version, as the John Wayne film wasn't as good a movie as the book was a book--not by a long shot. Yes, Wayne is terrific as Rooster Cogburn, but he's somewhat different from the Rooster of the novel, who was only in his forties, not his sixties, as in the film. The story was rewritten here at there, pointlessly in regard to the fate of LaBoeuf, harmlessly in terms of the actual ending on screen. The original is a good movie; I have no doubt that the Coen version will be better.

5. Not many movies made at anytime are close to what the version of the book it was based on. While we're at it let's remake "Casablanca", "Maltese Falcon", "The Searcher's" so on and so on..., hard to support a remake of an "Oscar" winning performance because they are no other original stories to do. Box office flop in the making. Out in DVD 2 weeks after release.

7. To the COEN BROS, how dare you tromp on sacred ground, I just watched TRUE GRIT foe the millionth time, I was raised on that movie. The very thought of a remake is just out of the question . I will do everything possible to tell everyone not to see it. For you guys to think that you could improve on the greatest film ever made is unthinkable .Furthermore, no one takes place of theDuke. Can't you guys find anything better to do?.What the hell,what the hell? Get a fucking life!!!!!!!!!!

8. Seldom are re-makes as good as the original, in my view. The original 3:10 to Yuma in black and white and its against type casting of usual good guy Glenn Ford as the villain made it pretty much a great western. The re-make in color was interesting but didn't grab the brass ring. I have read Charles Portis' book many times and agree if the book were followed closely, it could be a different movie.

However, there are still enough John Wayne fans out there who will be casting a critical, even jaundiced eye on Jeff Brildge"s portrayal of Rooster Cogburn. He'll have to do a reaaallly good job.

What will really bring the Western back is a well told story with believable characters and great scenery. I understand the brothers are looking at areas east of Austin for their re-make. The original True Grit fudged from Arkansas/Oklahoma Territory hills to mountains and areas around Montrose, Colorado, but the scenery was great. Landscape east of
Austin is pretty bland.
