Monsters vs. Aliens
Monsters, aliens, superheroes -- it's the sort of fare that's perfect for animation. For the most part, critics and fans seem to agree, although our Scott Weinberg says the film "is NOT one of those transcendent animated features, the sort that bridges the gap between kid stuff and grown-up art with no discernible effort whatsoever. The latest Jennifer Aniston romcom to hit the shelves, this flick watches her get followed around the country by a motel manager (Steve Zahn) eager for her affections. In his review, Nick Schager said that the film's conventions are "delivered with a straightforward sappiness that seems all the more disingenuous in light of the film's variety of off-kilter trappings." The Girlfriend Experience
One of Steven Soderbergh's less mainstream films, porn star Sasha Grey stars as a high-priced escort trying to balance her work and personal life. In his Sundance review, James Rocchi wrote: "Sex is everywhere in The Girlfriend Experience, except there's no sex," and instigates a crowd that walks "into the cold night more thoughtful than titillated." The Guild
Okay, so I'm cheating a little here. This is a web series, but it's by Felicia Day, it's excellent and funny, and is a perfect success story not only for female creators in Hollywood, but anyone who wants to be successful without compromising their vision. Buy it.

In a Dream
In 2005, a son set out to film the story of his artist father -- Isaiah Zagar -- and subsequently learned a whole lot more than he bargained for about his dad's struggles with sexual abuse, mental illness, and more. In his review, Scott Weinberg said: "director Jeremiah Zagar does a flawless job of documenting a man who is equal parts talented, lovable, and periodically (very) eccentric." Buy it.

Shrink
This indie film has gotten decent buzz but not a lot of play. Kevin Spacey stars as a jaded and damaged Hollywood psychiatrist who adds a pro bono case to his usual Tinseltown fare (stars, writers, agents). Reel Film Reviews said: "the film is ultimately less successful as a fully-realized drama than as a showcase for its myriad of talented actors." (Interview with Kevin Spacey here.) Rent it.

The Dark Crystal
Would you want to view a Jim Henson production in anything other than the best quality possible? Henson was epic for his visual talents with puppetry, and High Def Digest says that "Considering its age, the movie looks and sounds fantastic in HD. It has a plethora of special features, and some well thought out Blu-ray exclusives."

Labyrinth
David Bowie, a young Jennifer Connelly, and the bog of eternal stench in high definition. However, there is a price for such crispness as Den of Geek notes just how clear Henson's strings are now. There is one new special feature: "The Storytellers," where heads pop up throughout the movie and discuss specific aspects of the film. Now if only one of these releases would include the retro '80s computer game, I'd be happy.
