'Twilight' Sequel Already in the Works?

Here's a question: Should any studio greenlight a sequel based on advanced buzz and before the original even hits theaters? Sure, if you're a fan of the Twilight novels, I suspect you'd want the studio to greenlight, like, a billion Twilight sequels, like, right this second -- but wouldn't it be a risky move? Nikki Finke over at Deadline Hollywood claims Summit's already prepping the sequel (New Moon), though that's about as far as she goes with it. Finke, however, does state the obvious: that even though the first Twilight film isn't due out until November 21, the latest trailer was viewed over 3.5 million times in 48 hours, the Twilight soundtrack has already hit the Top 5 Best-Selling Albums on Amazon (despite the fact that it doesn't come out until November 4th) and the merchandise for this sucker rivals that of the boy wizard, Harry Potter.
Okay, so obviously there's an audience for not one film, but two -- yet what if that audience doesn't like the first installment? Is that even possible? Is this the sort of film fans will love no matter what the final product looks like? And do you really take a chance greenlighting a sequel with a film whose audience is not comprised of the oh-so-lucrative teen male population. Are teen and pre-teen girls (and their moms) enough to carry this entire franchise?
And for you Twilight fans out there: While early, is there anything different you'd like to see from the sequel?

I believe that teens and pre-teens might be enough make this a hit franchise. I was a teen girl when "Titanic" came out in theaters, and it was nearly every friend of mine going to see the movie thirteen, fourteen, fifteen times that kept it in theaters so long and helped it to bring in so much money.

The reason they probably want to start the sequels as soon as possible is because all four books take place within about 2 years, and only Bella is actually supposed to age during that time. If they wait until Twilight is a success before starting the next one, all the actors playing vampires will age, but the characters themselves are supposed to.
I've read that they'll probably film all three/four sequels (Breaking Dawn will likely be two movies) at the same time, a la Lord of the Rings, for this very reason.

My hope is that we get more of the vampire POV in book 2. Bella moping around for 3 months would make a boring movie.

Meh, hard to say.
I feel like the Harry Potter books are a cultural phenomenon, while the Twilight series is kind of a fad.
Yes, HP started out as a children's book, but really the subject matter far transcends the tween daughters and moms audience that Twilight has.
Not to completely bash; I'm a male twenty-something and I've read both series. The Twilight series is 100% no doubt aimed at a very, very specific audience. I have a love-hate relationship with the Twilight series, in that I love to hate them. Unless you are a teenage girl, I think Bella is a completely un-relatable character, as is most of the drama that happens within the books.
That last Twilight book took ridiculous liberties with everything that had been built up so far. I feel like it's an even split leaning towards negativity from most of the fanbase in regards to the last book. So the question is, if a studio is relying on the fanbase for the revenue, why would they adapt a novel that the fanbase panned?
Honestly this news comes as a bit of a shock. Of course one logical thought is of course they'll adapt the whole series. On the other hand, I really thought they'd wait to see how the first one does, before deciding whether or not to put more time and money into the films.

Me, I am 40 something.....
I loved the books, BD was kinda far fetched and there was a lot of people that hated it. I figure, it is just fiction! I am really hoping that the movie is good, really! I can also understand why they would want to do the movies quickly if they decide that.
It will be interesting to see what the numbers are for attendance, good that it is right before Thanksgiving.

I love director Catherine Hardwicke. Lords of Dogtown and Thirteen were both really interesting and well-made films. I think she has the capaity to take a narrowly focused topic/story and make it really applicable and, hopefully, powerful. I read the Twilight books and really didn't understand all the fuss, but I think they may turn into better movies.

I think teen girls and their moms will definitely be enough to carry the franchise. Look at how long Breaking Dawn was at number one on the fiction best sellers list, and it's not even a good book! That was all the moms and teen girls (and college girls like me). And I think the filmmakers put a lot more action into the movie to appeal to guys, so maybe that will work. I don't think it really matters if the movie is good or not. For example, I'm a Potter Head first and foremost and the Harry Potter movies never fail to disappoint me with the amount of information they leave out. However, I'm always there at the midnight premieres of the movies and I always buy the DVDs. Why? Because I love anything Harry Potter, no matter how poorly they adapt the books into films. If Twilighters are as die hard about this franchise as Potter Heads are about the Harry Potter franchise, the Twilight movie franchise should do pretty well.

Okay I personally love the books especially 1 & 3 I also think that the movies will do great even if they are for a specific fan base.. i mean take in consideration that most people who read these books are traveling cross country to a town (forks, wa) to site see just because the book is based on that town. SoI think if fans are that comitted these movies will be successful.

I completely agree with Erins comment above, ppl are still going to go see the movie even if it sucks because in some way its relted to the phenomenom of the Twilight series! I can definately see them translating all of the books into film, even though i dont see how they could or should pull some parts of it off eg Renesmee. In my opinion, i think the better option would just be to make the first movie Twilight, and stop it there. The plotline is not that complicated so they can easily do a great job of it, but with New Moon, Eclipse & BD, the storyline gets kinda intense and sooo much happens that would prob get left out in films and they would not be able to do it justice..oh well im still going to be seeing Twilight like a million times!

Has anyone seen the hundreds of fansites for this series? This is big in case anyone hasn't noticed. I really hope that they do New Moon. That will be great and I agree with one of the other posts. As well as focusing on Bella's grief and Jake and the pack, they can also really delve into what Edward's character went through. They're going to have to do a lot of CGI- that will definently appeal to male audiences as well. That paired with some motorcycles and action- throw in the lovey dovey stuff and you've got a picture for everyone!

From what I've seen in the trailer, the content of the movie seems to combine the difficulties of adaptation well with making it pleasing as a film as well - and if the trailer isn't just leading us to disappointment I'd say the film will do quite well.
This far, my only complaint has to do with that poster you've got on this post - Rosalie is supposed to be exceedingly astonishingly beautiful, even for a vampire. Will the film do her more justice than that poster up there, and regardless I think that's a pretty minor complaint.

I saw the trailer. I've seen the posters. I read the first book and really, as someone else says, don't get the fuss. There are oodles of books out there in the same genre, with the same target audience, that are far better-written and lack the mopey, angsty, "every-girl" main character and the sparkly prom-going vampire boyfriend.
That said, the movie will be huge. On the down side, I think it'll be the exact same film as "The Covenant", if anyone remembers that forgettable little excursion. I expect lukewarm reviews but massive box-office numbers from the 'OMG LOL Edward is sooo hott!' crowd.
Personally, I despised the series. I found it boring and poorly written. However, I can't hate on it too much because at least it does something I approve of- gets teen girls reading. And reading is always good.

Yes, someone else cast as Jacob.

You know sohryu, I would kinda agree with you about Jacob but I guess I should reserve judgement for after the movie. I hope they can do something with him, I just got weird feelings about the actor. But honestly, I have no idea who he is or what he has been in. So if there are any Team Jacobs out there, I don't have any idea what is going on there.
KMH219, I hate that you despised the books. I am actually reading them again, just to enjoy them this time, I just started book 3. Maybe I am just a boring stay-home-mom??? But I do have lots of friends and daughters that like the series also.
What kind of books do you like?

I'm a huge horror/sci-fi/vampire/fantasy/you-name-it fan. On my reading list right now that people that liked Twilight might like are:
Any of Amelia Atwater-Rhodes' young adult vampire books
"Night Watch" and sequels by Sergei Lukyanenko
"Blackwood Farm" by Anne Rice
"Watchmen" by Alan Moore
Also anything and everything by Neil Gaiman. Try "Neverwhere" or "The Graveyard Book" to start, or "American Gods" if you're ambitious.

Yes. Or rather, these are the kinds of fans who will love the film no matter what it looks like. Unlike the comic book geeks who have developed certain standards for the adaptations of their favorite works over the years, fangirls of this particular persuasion have been sadly neglected, so they are going to take anything they can get. I just hope that if we're going to see this segment of the market assert itself more aggressively, they can prove a little more discerning before we're up to our ears in these bloodless *sparkly* pseudo-vamps.

i mean come on...in todays movie industry, are you REALLY surprised that they are already working on the sequel? Its all about money..that always comes first..I figured that they would end up making movies out of the whole series, its was really kinda obvious. I really don't understand all the critisizims for the film yet, IT HASN"T BEEN RELEASED PEOPLE!! I also feel that many people are not informed of the fact that the author worked on the film with the director throughout the whole film, and worked to keep her vision of everything intact. The whole idea that this is just a series for tweens and stay-at-home moms, couldn't be more wrong. There will always be haters just for the simple fact of hating. I see the film doing very well in the box office and also at grabbing new fans. i say wait and see before negative judgement is passed. As for the fans of the book who are hating on the movie...get it in yur phuckin head that these are 2 different mediums..period!!

I personally think that movies kill the books.
They murder them.
I have to say, when I first read the Twilight Saga then found out there was a movie, I was so excited.
For me && all of my friends, once you read this series, it's like, all you can think about for quite a while.
So, all of us couldn't wait for the movie.
Then you think "Will the movie just kill the book like most movies?"
You think "Nah, it'll be awesome. Stephenie Meyer wouldn't write an awesome book then ruin it with a movie. She wouldn't have it."
Then, you see the trailor.
Almost everything is messed up, reagranged, or just retarded.
They add a few scenes, take some away, and now the only thing that's the same is the names.
If only they found a director who REALLY connected with the book like many of us reading it did.
I still believe the movie will be awesome.
&& I soooo hope they make sequals even if it isn't as awesome as the books.

I totally think they should go ahead with new moon! I know so many girls that are going to midnight premiers, even if there is school the next day. Plus me and my friends plan to see it many times in theaters, then buy the DVD. I also believe that guys are gonna see it to either with their girlfriend or sister even just because they want to I know of a few that have read all the books and liked them. (I love you both Edward and Jacob!)
