Box Office: Righteous Women Burning and Preying
Filed under: Comedy, Drama, Thrillers, Box Office Predictions
1. Bangkok Dangerous: $7.8 million
2. Tropic Thunder: $7.2 million
3. The Dark Knight: $5.5 million
4. The House Bunny: $5.5 million
5. Traitor: $4.2 million
We've got five new releases this week. Will any of these be able to bolster a sagging box office? Let's see.
Burn After ReadingWhat's It All About: In the newest film from Ethan and Joel Coen, Brad Pitt and Frances McDormand star as health club employees who find a CD full of classified information left behind by a CIA agent played by John Malkovich. George Clooney also stars.
Why It Might Do Well: This is an awesome cast and those are the No Country For Old Men guys behind the camera. The film also scored a 75% Fresh rating at Rottentomatoes.com.
Why It Might Not Do Well: Jennifer Aniston's followers may not have forgiven Brad yet.
Number of Theaters: 2,300
Prediction: $12 million
Proud AmericanWhat's It All About: The film presents five inspirational stories of Americans struggling to succeed.
Why It Might Do Well: This being an election year, the patriotism angle may draw some in.
Why It Might Not Do Well: The trailer strikes me as a bit sappy, and this has the feel of a made for TV movie.
Number of Theaters: 700
Prediction: $2.5 million
Righteous KillWhat's It All About: After thirty years of working together on the NYPD, two detectives played by Robert De Niro and Al Pacino investigate a serial killer who is killing criminals who have escaped prosecution.
Why It Might Do Well: This one is fueled by high octane star power.
Why It Might Not Do Well: As awesome as De Niro and Pacino are, can they still bring in a young audience?
Number of Theaters: 2,800
Prediction: $16 million
Tyler Perry's The Family That PreysWhat's It All About: Writer/director Tyler Perry's latest deals with two families from opposite sides of the track, and the scheming and infidelity that threatens to tear them apart.
Why It Might Do Well: Meet the Browns took in almost $42 million and Why Did I Get Married made about $55 million. Perry's films have proven to be reliable if not stellar money makers.
Why It Might Not Do Well: Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard are big names, but not as big as some of the other stars who have movies opening this week.
Number of Theaters: 2,000
Prediction: $18 million
The WomenWhat's It All About: In this remake of the 1939 film of the same name, four affluent women find their friendship put to the test when one of them finds out her husband is having an affair.
Why It Might Do Well: This one is tailor made for female audiences.
Why It Might Not Do Well: Getting men to see this may be difficult.
Number of Theaters: 2,600
Prediction: $8 million
With fingers crossed, here's what I think we'll be seeing next week:
1. Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys Together
2. Righteous Kill
3. Burn After Reading
4. The Women

In all honesty, my list is reckless... I really think Tyler Perry's film might only hight #6, and I think that House Bunny might hold on. This is careless!

I'm not even sure about Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys getting second because I have seen very little marketing on this movie.
