Discuss: Villains You Want to See in 'Spidey' 4 & 5
Filed under: Sony, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
Frankly I'm a little bit confused as to why Sam Raimi never allowed Dylan Baker to become The Lizard. The guy had three full movies in which to utilize the character, but then again -- I suppose "The Lizard" isn't nearly as high-profile (or as nifty) as Green Goblin, Dr. Octopus, The Sandman, or Venom. But they let a one-armed Dylan Baker hang around for this long, so why not give the actor his shot at villainy already?Having ranted that, I now turn my attentions towards some of the other (as yet unused) Spider-Man villains -- and this superhero has lots of 'em. (I'm fully convinced that Spidey's "rogue gallery" is one of the biggest reasons for the book's ongoing popularity.) I realize that some of these guys might work better on the page than on the big screen, but hey, you can't make two more Spidey sequels without two or three (or four) new villains. So even though the screenplays are probably already finished, I figure this is a fun topic to toss around...
Jason Statham as The Vulture -- I vaguely remember this green, winged character being a bit older than Mr. Statham, but Vulty was also bald and a real nasty character, so I'd still go with Statham.
Bill Paxton as Mysterio -- Dunno why I picked Paxton. Probably because he's one of my favorite actors, and I'd love to see him play a big-budget villain. Plus he wears a big fish-bowl on his head, so any good actor with a strong voice could pull this off.
Gerard Butler as Kraven the Hunter -- Like this guy couldn't play a homicidal game hunter. Plus he kinda looks like Kraven.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman as The Rhino -- More of an evil henchman than a brilliant super-villain, but he's more than strong enough to whack Spidey through a building or three. And Hoffman could definitely bring a few cool shades to a relatively one-dimensional ass-kicker who wears a wacky rhinocerous suit.
William H. Macy as Electro -- This villain started out as an accountant, so that's kind of why I thought of Macy. Like Hoffman, Macy could also bring a malicious sense of humor to a bad guy who wears a decidedly goofy mask.
Alec Baldwin as Hammerhead -- A gangster with a strangely flat head. But he's pretty dangerous, and I'd love to see Baldwin play a super-villain of some sort.
Chiwetel Ejiofor as Tombstone -- Only an actor of this skill level could play an evil African-American Albino. Plus this villain speaks only in whispers, is amazing at hand-to-hand combat, and enjoys looking like a vampire. That's worth my 9 bucks right there.
Brad Dourif as Morbius -- Turned himself into a vampire through scientific methods. And there are few "genre actors" as enjoyable as Brad Dourif.
Bruce Campbell as The Scorpion -- J. Jonah Jameson helped turn this unscupulous private detective into one of Spidey's most persistent enemies, plus he has a tail-thingie that can do all sorts of expensive damage. Plus it's about time that Campbell got himself a "real" role in a Spidey flick.
Ed Harris as Carnage -- He'd be mostly CGI, obviously, but any chance to see Ed Harris in a superhero movie....
And that's all I got for now. I'm open to suggestions, of course, and I still have yet to cast some of the wackier villains like Shocker, Hydro-Man, The Chameleon, The Grizzly, The Gibbon, The Jackal, and The Kangaroo. Jeez, they've got enough villains for 15 sequels.
And whatever happened to the Man-Wolf subplot that was briefly introduced in Spider-Man 2?

(Page 1)2. Wow, indeed. You really think Bill Paxton is the worst actor on the face of the earth? That's one bold superlative. I respectfully disagree.
And yes, I definitely think Hoffman is talented enough an actor to play "very angry and very dumb."
Macy ... OK, maybe not such a great choice. I wouldn't mind hearing some of your suggestions, as you clearly know a bit about the Spidey baddies.

3. If I remember correctly, wasn't one of Bruce Campbell's Spidey appearances credited as "Quentin Beck" (probably the third)? Quentin Beck is the alter-ego of the original Mysterio.

5. Forest Whitaker should be in it. Not sure what villain he should play. Forest Whitaker is just a badass actor and would make the movie better.

7. Yeah, I'm going to agree with Flatpicker. Your suggestions are some of the worst possible candidates for the roles listed. I'm in shock at how you could even remotely think those are good ideas.

8. And you clearly illustrate how wretched my picks were by countering with some of your own.
Oh wait a minute...

9. The one I could see is Butler as Kraven. That's a character that would translate to film, and 'Kraven's Last Hunt' would be great to adapt. Not sure how you deal with the cemetery stuff or Vermin though. I guess you could just imprison Spidey and omit Vermin.

10. I would like to see the dynamic with black cat vs mary jane. Black cat is the opposite of mary being she can protect herself and is a strong female presence. It would be cool to have someone team up with spiderman vs. another enemy. Get more character goodness in that way instead of just doing villains.
Megan Fox as Black cat.... yeah ?...

11. Jason Statham as the vulture?
Ed Harris as carnage?
Carnage isnt that old and would require more of a different energy than ed harris has displayed. I love Ed Harris but this list just isnt right...
Id have to say Ben Kingsley as the Vulture. the right age and could definitely translate the character to the big screen.
Carnage should be someone younger. Alan Tudyk could be closer to the comic character and I always want to see more of him.

12. Yeah, gotta say I'm not too big on your casting picks.
But just so I don't come across all judgmental, I've got one:
I've always thought that Ben Kingsley would make one creepy, badass Vulture.

14. Jason Statham would be cool as the vulture if they use the Metal Wing version and chance the story for him a bit. Though if he had that part he couldn't be daredevil.

15. I quote myself from the Maguire and Raimi Back for Spider-Man 4 and 5!? post: "As for the new villain or villains I would like to see Mysterio on screen. I would also want to see Carnage on screen if and only if the filmmaker don’t mess it up like the did with Venom. I would like to see a villain who goes around killing just for the hell of it. I believe one of the biggest faults Spider-Man 3 had was it had too many villainous story-arcs. So please filmmakers of Spider-Man one use one villain per film. If the filmmakers want to go the multiple villain route then at least bring out the Sinister Six. I am mean new villains are coming out of the wood work aka the Lizard." This is my opinion on how the the new villains should be taken care off as for who should be cast in the role I need some time to think. I will have to research and then I my opinion.

17. i'd like to see scorpion in spidy 4. and i'd also like it to happen so that peter grows like 8 arms i like that part. and if they do carnage can the symos (sp?) come from the crashing spaceship like it is suppose to instead of some stupid meteor show. GAWD

19. I think they have to stay away from the symbiotes. Carnage would be cool, yeah, but I dunno that they've learned from their Venom fiasco. They'd also have to do away with the whole "symbiote-pulls-away-from-the-face-to-let-the-actor-talk" thing. That pissed me off.
I think it's a good chance we'll have the Lizard, so, cool. The real question is what major villains are left that can stretch over two movies -- or at least, a movie and a half, say, given origin time and whatnot? Maybe some of the lesser guys like Rhino or Scorpion will get a cameo, but something bigger's gotta happen. Although I really do hope they stay away from the three-villain mix. If they did, say, Lizard, Mysterio, and Black Cat (for the is-she-isn't-she a villain thing), that would work alright. I think a Black Cat storyline is a good call. Lizard is a safe bet, and I'd go with Mysterio for the last one.
So, with Quentin Beck's Mysterio in mind, I say Jackie Earle Haley; for Black Cat, Lindsay Lohan. No, I'm kidding. Don't worry. I actually think Rachel McAdams would be good for the part. Maybe it's because I haven't seen her for awhile, but I think she's a solid fit. And Lizard has Dylan Baker. Sweet.

20. What about Eliza Dushku as Black Cat? Didn't that rumor go around once? She could certainly play the tough girl part, and would look hot doing it.

1. Wow. I've got to say that I disagree with most of those recommendations. First off, Bill Paxton is the worst actor on the face of this earth. Hoffman as the Rhino?! Are you talking about Charlie Wilson's War Hoffman?! Or even Patch Adams Hoffman?! I'm not sure how you could think he could pull off a 71 IQ villain. Unless the only Hoffman role you've seen came from Twister which seems to fit. Willaim H. Macy as Electro? I'll admit that I don't know much about the Electro character, but I can't see the Mace in a superhero movie. He had his shot in Mystery Men and failed. I will give you Butler, Dourif and Campbell. Butler could pull off a nice Kraven. Giving him the raw edge (300) at the same time the love for his wife (P.S. I Love You). We've already seen Dourif look vampire-ish, I just hope he isn't too meek to pull it off. And I think the scorpion is a off-beat enough character to let Campbell have fun with him, but I wouldn't suggest making him the main villain. Maybe a fun montage of the lesser known villains could include some of these without committing too much.
