Rumor Patrol: Fox Will NOT Scrap Live-Action 'Dragonball'
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, RumorMonger, 20th Century Fox, Comic/Superhero/Geek
We all know that the Internet is the birthplace of nasty rumors. It has been proven many times before that bad word of mouth has the power to cripple a flick. But Fox has been fighting back the naysayers and have debunked a rumor that has been gaining speed surrounding James Wong's live-action Dragonball. Rumors had surfaced over at Film Junk last week that the studio was about to pull the plug on their feature film version of the classic anime. The speculation began when Junk received a tip that "the higher-ups at Fox are not too impressed the footage that has been shot thus far, and are seriously debating shutting the whole thing down. -- the movie supposedly has a budget of over $100 million and I can understand them wanting to cut some losses while they still can."Dragonball stars Justin Chatwin as Goku (a controversial casting choice to say the least), a hero on a quest to find the "mystical Dragonballs" before the evil Lord Piccolo (as played by James Marsters) can get his hands on them. Also starring are Emmy Rossum as Bulma, Chow Yun-Fat as Master Roshi, and Jamie Chung as Goku's love interest, Chi Chi.
But, for better or for worse, it turns out that it was nothing but a load of nasty innuendo. The official blog for Dragonball has since gotten to the bottom of the whole mess, and according to them, "20th Century Fox states the information reported was false and the film is still scheduled for an April 2009 release." Now, new reports are surfacing that Fox 'loves' what they have seen, and the only reason the release date was pushed back was to ensure enough time for finishing the F/X.
So what do you think? Is Fox's enthusiasm genuine for the much-maligned project, or just damage control gone into overdrive?
Dragonball will hit theaters in April, 2009.

(Page 1)2. First of all there is no "official blog" for Dragonball. And secondly, It was Superheroflix that debunked the rumor.

6. I cannot believe they're spending 100 million dollars on this. Fox have become a terrible studio. They have no faith in the real talent they deal with and the movies really show it. Then they splurge on disposable crap like this. The mind boggles.

9. They'd better release it. I have no interest in Dragonball, but I want to see James Marsters on the big screen.

10. Am I the only one who thinks this could turn out awesome? I laugh that you're all dismissing this before seeing even a hint of what the $100 mill f/x will look like.

11. THANK YOU! I got through the first 7 or 8 posts and thought "this is ridiculous, a bunch of people bashing a movie when they haven't seen a single second of it". Get over it people, at least wait until a trailer comes out before you dismiss a film. There have been a lot of movies with terrible sounding premises that turned out to be awesome, and a whole bunch that should've been great that stunk. I for one am really curious to see what they do with this. Am I hugely optimistic? No, I think its a tough translation, but at the same time do I think its an impossible one? Of course not. Have some faith.

13. Mortal Combat was like the game, Resident Evil. But from what i see of this trailer, it's nothing like the series. It may be one of the best movies to come out, a box office smash of such, but if it doesn’t stick to its origins, then it’s just another street fighter, can anybody say; ‘none American Guile or Kylie Minogue Cammy’. First of all, does anybody on this blog know or have a friend, who is a white guy called Goku?
You’re only going to get camera tricks like crouching tiger, people pretending to walk on trees, fake fighting; and to you hardcore DB fans worldwide, you must be disappointed. By Goku alone, never mind the none green Piccolo and Master Roshi with a full head of hair, tall and serious, when has master Roshi ever been serious. As for Bulma, she should have blue hair and where is Krillin and Tien. Finally I have beef with the storyline, WHERE IS GOKU’S TAIL and what’s up with his hair? It may be a good movie, but it is not DB, give the movie another name it not DB. To be continued after the release date.

14. This thing was a bad idea from the begining, sorry but i have no faith that this will be anything but horrible. the people who are putting this together have no passion for the source material and are in fact just doing it to capitalize on the passion that the fans of the anime have. it happened to speed racer, it will happen to db this is a fail.

15. I Love Jesus
for everyone
I'm going to heaven.
No, I don't deserve it.
And there is nothing I can ever do to buy it.
No amount of money I can donate,
no deed righteous enough to save myself alone.
I'm not worthy enough, on my own, to claim eternal life...
But I don't have to do anything --
no incense to offer, no prayer schedules, not even going to church every sattarday --
Because it has already been done for me.
That's how much Jesus loves me.
He loves me more than my mom does.
More than any girlfriend I could ever have.
More than someone...
And I love him too...
Not as perfectly.
But I do...
I REALLY DO...
