Once again we're bouncing around the trailer-verse, finding a preview of interest and letting word association zig us into one trailer before zagging into another. Here we go ...
The Spirit
The Spirit teaser made the movie look a bit too much like a Sin City sequel, but this full length trailer seems to give a better look at what it's all about. Tons of bizarre imagery to digest here, with a strong emphasis on The Spirit's love interests, which appears to be pretty much every woman in the cast. I've only read a few Spirit comics over the years so I wasn't sure what to expect. Still, Frank Miller is giving this a major dose of visual style which has me looking forward to the December 25 release date. Here's Elisabeth's take on it.
And speaking of all things spiritual...
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Up through Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire I felt the film adaptations of J.K. Rowling's novels improved with each installment. I also liked Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, but for the first time I thought too many details from the book were glossed over or left out entirely, making the movie feel more like highlights from the book than a complete adaptation. I'm hoping I don't get that feeling when the Half-Blood Prince hits theaters because I'm liking this trailer. We really get the feel of the series' increasing darkness as we see a flashback of Professor Dumbledore's first meeting with Tom Riddle, the boy who will grow up to become Lord Voldemort. I'm expecting great stuff for Harry's sixth year at Hogwart's. Here's what Erik had to say on the trailer.
And speaking of school...
The Substitute
I couldn't find an English-language version of this Danish trailer, but not understanding the dialog kind of adds an air of mystery to this bizarre looking flick. Apparently we have a woman working as a substitute teacher who is actually a multi-tentacled alien. Some of the kids at school are suspicious and one unlucky androgynous teen finds the teacher getting cozy with his/her dad. The premise kind of reminds me of The Faculty meets My Stepmother is an Alien and there are some cool effects on display including glimpses of the teacher's true form and some kind of hole in time/space like the one in Donnie Darko. It looks scary with a touch of humor, most notably when the chicken gets pulverized by a meteor. Here's what Peter had to say about the trailer.
And speaking of language issues...
Outlander
The premise for this film is so awesome that the trailer can't help but be a bit of a let down. A spaceship crashes in Norway in the year 709 A.D. and the ship's pilot Kainan (James Caviezel) must battle and ultimately join forces with a group of viking warriors (one of whom is played by Ron Perlman) to defeat the predatory alien monstrosity he has brought to Earth with him. There's lots of action here, including scenes of big Nordic men swinging hammers. I'm a little bothered by the Star Trek-ish shortcuts here, specifically our alien pilot is just as human as you or I and speaks perfect English (or Norwegian or whatever it is the Vikings would be speaking). That aside, you've got aliens, vikings, and spectacular violence all in one neat little package. What's not to like? Here's Eugene's take on the trailer.
And speaking of aliens...
Yes Man
While I don't actually believe Jim Carrey to be an alien, I can certainly see where his antics might suggest an extraterrestrial origin. Anyway, in this one he plays a man whose spent his entire life being negative and saying no to everything. Inspired by a self-help guru played by Terrence Stamp (who DID play an alien in Superman II), Carey's character is suddenly inspired to say yes to everything and a world of new opportunities open up to him. Carrey's trademark lunacy is in evidence, particularly during the bit where he tells Zooey Deschanel how much he loves Red Bull. A lot of Carrey's films have been built around his talent for improvisation and physical comedy, but he's steered away from that with films like The Number Twenty-Three (a mediocre thriller), Fun With Dick and Jane (a painfully bad remake) and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (I really loved this one). This looks like a return to classic Carrey. I must confess a little disappointment that the plot sounds similar to Liar, Liar, but I have hopes for this one.
