New Photos From 'The Road'

A bunch of new photos from the highly anticipated The Road have premiered over at USA Today. (Check out two more photos in the gallery below, then head on over to USA Today's photo gallery for the rest) They are bone-chillingly bleak and powerful, enough to send a shiver down your spine even in the middle of summer. All of the scenery is real, and the film is employing no CGI to create its post-apocalyptic landscapes.

I don't want to engage in eager hyperbole, but I can't get over the desperate look in Viggo Mortensen's eyes in the second photo. If his performance lives up to the early images (and I can't believe that it won't), I wouldn't be surprised if he garnered another Oscar nomination. We still have such a long wait (it's released November 14th) that I hope we see a trailer soon. In the meantime, I still need to read the book ...

1. Holy shit. Chilling is right. The picture of the truck took me back to one of the more disturbing images of the book. To sum it up in a word: Catamites. Go grab your dictionary.

3. I'm interested to see what they do with Charlize Theron's character because she's not featured much in the book. In the USA Today article, they say they're expanding her character and including stuff that's not in the book -- so we'll see ...

Mike, same here with the picture of the truck. All I imagine is the little boy saying, "Are those the bad guys?"

4. Good call, Erik. That raw, no-reason-to-pretend honesty between the father and the boy is one of the things I am really looking forward to seeing. Casting the kid must have been a chore.

5. I cannot wait for this film! This is high on my list of hopefuls in the fall lineup. Stellar cast and the more we see of the world created in this film, the more excited I get. Chilling absolutely chilling.

6. Unfortunately if the movie sticks to the book it will not be a big money maker. People now-a-days want the happy ending. You should have heard all the negative comments I heard leaving the theatre after No Country for Old Men ended.

8. You absolutely have to read this book if you haven't yet. It's thoroughly gut wrenching. I honestly am a little apprehensive to have to see a visual interpretation of the horrors the characters go through. It should be very powerful (hopefully)!

9. When you go to IMDB and see a cast listing for "amputee man in cellar," then yes, I share your apprehension at seeing the horrors brought to life!
