'Red Dawn' Remake Finds Writer and Director

The original was a sea of '80s names we grew to love over those ten years -- Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell, Lea Thompson, Charlie Sheen, and Jennifer Grey. A year after The Outsiders stood up to the socs, Ponyboy and Darry were facing the Russians. But facing them again all these years later? Scott shared news of the plan in May, and now we're one step closer to this sucky idea becoming a reality. The Hollywood Reporter posts that this remake will be written by Red Eye and Disturbia scribe Carl Ellsworth and directed by Dan Bradley, a stunt guy who has also worked as a second AD on flicks from Three Kings to Quantum of Solace. Ellsworth says: "The tone is going to be very intense, very much keeping in mind the post-9/11 world that we're in. As Red Dawn scared the heck out of people in 1984, we feel that the world is kind of already filled with a lot of paranoia and unease, so why not scare the hell out of people again?"
Um ... maybe because Cuba and Russia never invaded, so as much as it touched on Cold War fears, it was still outside of reality? If they're playing up 9/11 fears in the world, I think the outcome could prove to be a little different -- more reliving horrors than tapping into fears, and who wants to pay to see that?
What's truly scary: "As the studio regroups, its executives have realized that the strong MGM library has numerous classic and cult properties it can exploit for a new audience." I think it's time to stage a coup, or a hostile takeover.

(Page 1)2. They should just make the musical. Family Guy has already provided one song for it.

4. I'm with you mrrong. I was in high school in rural Florida, completely entrenched in Army JROTC, and a loyal disciple of Ronald Reagan when Red Dawn came out. The movie was like a dream come true and my mind formulated all kinds of scenarios of Cubans invading through South FL. Of course in my mind, my buddies and I would be sniping them in the swamp. Obviously nothing like that ever happened, but at the time is was remote possibility and fueled our wargames too. Red Dawn was the first VHS tape I bought with my own hard earned money - $45. It is one of the few things I have held on to over the years and is proof they can be played 10,000 times and still work. (yes I have the DVD too). Watching a few minutes of it when I run across it on late night cable doesn't stir the emotions like it used to, but it's funny how I can still recite every line. I was truly disappointed by Indiana Jones 4 hoping for an improvement over 2 & 3. I can only hope Red Dawn 2 lives up to my expectations, but unless Michael Mann and Jerry Bruckheimer team up to direct it, I don't see how.

5. Red Dawn was a great movie! And anyone who knocks it probably wasn't even born until the 90's. My only fear is that an aweful remake might taint the greatness that was the original. As long as they don't cast the Jonas Brothers i'm cool with it!!

6. A "Red Dawn" remake doesn't seem to be too far-fetched a concept to me... The invasion by Central and South America has proceeded according to schedule since the release of the original film.
Actually, they should produce "Red Dawn - The Twilight of Fascism", in which the United States routs the invaders from the south, then follows up by annexing the oil-producing areas of Central America and stabilizing our borders.
The "producer" of that effort should be the U.S. Congress...
As they will undoubtedly say in another recently announced remake, "I'd buy that for a dollar..."

7. The thing with "Red Dawn" is, if you can see past the U-S-A! U-S-A! stuff, it kind of portrays what it's like to be occupied by a foreign power. I saw it when I was a kid and what stayed with me was not so much "ooh, scary Russians" as "wow, being invaded must really suck".

8. It would only make sense if.... A nuke goes off in a major city, then the Federal Government declares Martial Law, curfews, Gun confiscation, & starts censoring the news, and the American people are told that some Muslim country is behind it, when in fact, the current administration is. All in an attempt for the current administration to declare it's supreme ruler, and merge the U.S. with Canada and Mexico. And instate a new currency. The whole thing.
All resisters are to be executed. Soon after this happens, pockets of resistance pop up all around the nation. Then once the troops make it to their town, they are ready for them.

1. Yes please. I know that whichever group the writer picks as the enemy (either China or Extreme Muslims) will be pissed, but I don't care. Red Dawn fueled the imagination of my brothers and I, and inspired countless hours of play fights with other neighborhood boys. If a guy stood up in the middle of the grocery store and yelled "Wolverines", I would take off my tie, wrap it around my head, and stand behind him (with my belt slung across my shoulder like a bandoleer). Sign me right up.
