Fan Rant: Robert Rodriguez, McGowan, Dennings, and Gossip

After rumors bubbled up about a possible end to Robert Rodriguez and Rose McGowan, her rep told People: "the production of all three films is moving forward with Rose to star." I'd question that since all the double R seems to be doing lately is acquiring projects that don't seem to go anywhere. Yes, there's a chance that they might be on hold while he films Shorts, but that production is where the new hub-ub is coming from (via Defamer).

I highly doubt there's any truth to the matter, but it's worth a glance into the rumor that Rodriguez is now canoodling his new young star, Kat Dennings. She's the girl who got her start on Sex and the City as the "f**king fabulous" rich girl having a bat mitzvah, and has since got a stepdad in a 40-year-old Virgin, and impressed audiences with her time with Charlie Bartlett.

I wouldn't be surprised if this rumor is just born out of her seemingly huge love for the man, as she described on her blog: "...redonkulous superhuman Robert Rodriguez. And as I tilted my head to look at the pavement tonight while we were talking I felt the ground give way beneath me and I've been a peanut butter person ever since." I think he might have cooked for her ... Anyway, girl crushes don't necessarily mean relationships. Still, McGowan ex Marilyn Manson is with Evan Rachel Wood, so anything is possible.

It's inevitable that whomever RR ends up with, whether he's sticking with Rose or moving on, she'll be involved in his career. Elizabeth Avellan worked behind the screen, while McGowan is the gal in front of it. That's just the way it is. The big difference now is that his relationships are outwardly affecting his work. Having your wife help you make your films is not quite the same as having your new woman star in every single one of them (save Shorts) -- small bits, maybe, always starring -- not so much.

If the Dennings rumor is true, would McGowan really still do those three gigs, if anything ever came of them? Or, would Barbarella become a bit younger than expected? If the project really gets off the ground, I would want no one but Rose. Although, heck, I'd take anyone over Jessica Alba. But that doesn't mean I'm into this joint deal. McGowan fits the role, and hey, she'll even pull off a chained woman pretty well, but continuing this director/star trend is just overkill.

Really, all I want is a return of the Rodriguez. He needs to leave behind the guy who dates his star and leaves a wave of gossip and drama, the man who requires tons of money for a silly little feature. He needs to get back to low-budget, one-man feats of digital filmmaking with a variety of themes, stars, and fun.

What do you think?
