Box Office: Hellboy's Journey to Meet Dave
Filed under: Action, Comedy, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Trailer Trash, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
1. Hancock $62.6 million
2. Wall-E $32.5 million
3. Wanted $20 million
4. Get Smart $11.1 million
5. Kung Fu Panda $7.3 million
Three new ones this week with (surprise) yet another superhero flick gunning for the top spot.
Hellboy II: The Golden ArmyWhat's It All About: Ron Perlman returns as Hellboy, a demon employed by the U.S. government to do battle against the things that go bump in the night. Denizens of a mystical world of supernatural creatures are about to wage war upon humanity, and Hellboy, the scarlet skinned scourge of evil, must stop them. Also returning are Doug Jones as the aquatic Abe Sapien (voicing the character himself this time, and not being dubbed by David Hyde Pierce) and Selma Blair as the pyrokinetic Liz.
Why It Might Do Well: In a nutshell: Guillermo del Toro. The man behind the original Hellboy film is back. In addition to being rejoined by the original cast, Hellboy creator Mike Mignola collaborated on the script. Also, we're talking 90% from Rottentomatoes.com.
Why It Might Not Do Well: Who's going to go see a movie based on a comic book? Oh, wait...
Number of Theaters: 2,900
Prediction: $42 million
Journey To The Center of the EarthWhat's It All About: Jules Verne's novel about an expedition to a world hidden within the Earth's core is adapted once again, this time starring Brendan Fraser.
Why It Might Do Well: When I saw Beowulf in 3-D my socks were blown clean off. Hell, I still haven't found them. The process can make for quite a spectacle. Also, Rottentomatoes.com gives the film an 86% fresh rating.
Why It Might Not Do Well: Aside from the 3-D, does the film really have anything to offer?
Number of Theaters: 2,700
Prediction: $22 million
Meet DaveWhat's It All About: Teeny tiny aliens arrive on Earth in a vehicle shaped like Eddie Murphy. Yes, you read that correctly.
Why It Might Do Well: This is the same star/director combo that gave us Norbit, and while that flick is not my cup of tea, it did gross $159 million worldwide.
Why It Might Not Do Well: Again, we have the Norbit connection.
Number of Theaters: 2,950
Prediction: $14 million

1. Hellboy II: The Golden Army
2. Hancock
3. Journey to the Center of the Earth
4. Wall-E
5. Meet Dave

Ugh, I didn't think Hancock would do so well, and that Wall-E would nosedive so early. Clearly an underestimation of Will Smith's star appeal. That guy can make sh!t shine like silver. However (and I'll probably be dead last again) I just can't believe Smith can hold up such a short and critcally panned film for two weeks straight...if he does I have lost my faith - again - in moviegoers.
It used to be easier to predict these things, but now that EVERYTHING is PG-13, you can't say something like "kids will flock to the Journey film since Hellboy is R-rated and targets the adult crowd" But because it's primarily an I-MAX film imo it'll have lower numbers.
I so wish Wall-E did better...people just don't appreciate art anymore. :o\

2) Journey to the Center of the Earth
4) Wall-E
5) Wanted
Tough call on Meet Dave...I think it'll tank...but then again, moviegoers made Norbit and that dumb 300 parody a smashing hit...*sigh*

The only thing I will ever appreciate Eddie Murphy in would be a 48hrs sequal or Beverly Hills Cop 4, unless he goes back to stand-up RAW!!

This is probably the toughest one so far this summer. I think that Journey to the Center of the Earth has a shot at upsetting both Hellboy and Hancock, but that chance is slim, so...
