New 'Spirit' Poster: Silken Floss Does More Than Type!

Yahoo! Movies (click image for larger version). It looks like we may be getting a new poster for
The Spirit every Friday night -- which is appropriate given their tone so far. Last week brought us
a saucy Eva Mendes, this week's poster is an equally naughty Scarlett Johansson. Her tagline is quite the eyebrow raiser, isn't it? I am not sure if she's directing it at the audience, or if you are meant to be instructing her. Given that Silken Floss is a villainous young secretary, I am thinking the latter. (How very Maggie Gyllenhaal of her!) I'm not sure I like this ad campaign so far, but then, I am a girl and clearly not the target audience.
The Spirit opens December 25th, 2008.

1. The femme fatales were always big part of Eisner's series, so the ad campaign works well from that aspect.
The series had a little bit of a cheesecake factor when it came to the women, so this does tie in to that. Of course, as you noted about the target audience, nothing like a pretty face to get your attention -- and the entendre drives it home. (Then again, I do fall in the 18-to-35 Male target audience, so they got my attention.)
But I still worry that they're focusing more on the supplemental characters than trying to get the moviegoers interested in the Spirit himself, which is actually a pretty good story, but there's probably a good amount of comic book readers who are unfamiliar with the character. (Myself, I'd recommend Darwyn Cooke's recently completed run on the character. Felt that it hit the best parts of the character and was very much Eisner-esque.)
I've still got some reservations about this because it seems to be a way, WAY much darker take on the character than what I'm used to, kind of like Miller's latest take of Batman in "All-Star Batman and Robin."
But that doesn't mean it's going to be a bad thing. I enjoyed Sin City, but this is still something on the other spectrum. It's not sunshine and flowers -- far from it -- but still had a little bit of a light-hearted tone to it at times.
I'll probably reserve judgement until another trailer appears and this poster campaign runs it course.
