Television adaptations of film adaptations of books scare me a bit. The product can be extremely watered down by the time it hits the tv screen. But I do have faith in Eick, based on BSG (less so from Bionic Woman), so I am willing to give this a whirl.

I'm not sure how "epic" the world of CoM really is. It's more gritty. Like BSG, really. There are certainly plenty of interesting stories here to explore. Between this and Caprica, hopefully we have some decent candidates to replace BSG when it tragically leaves the air.

2. I'm not keen on sci-fi doing another set piece show... given how stingy they are with money, I'm sure we'll be treated to five episodes a season where a main character and a secondary character are trapped in an elevator, in a stuck car in a "forest", in a room, on a hospital bed while we're treated to flashbacks and since this is COM, a barn.

3. Monika, have you read "The Children of Men"?

I read it, after seeing the movie. It's a richly portrayed world, just as the movie has a richly portrayed world; they are similar, though not identical, naturally. PD James' book talks more about how loopy people got when they could not have children. The movie has animals everywhere, you will notice; in the book, people are even more pet-crazy, having their kittens baptized in church, having birthing parties when their cat has kittens, whatever. Also dog and pet births are regulated and you can't have a litter without a license, which makes sense, as nuts as people were about their animals; the population could easily get way out of control, with fewer and fewer people around to look after the animals.

In a similar vein, people had incredibly realistic dolls that they would pretend were real babies. And instead of satisfying people's needs for progeny, these substitutes - pets, dolls, whatever - only made them crazier.

The legalized suicide thread takes a different direction in the book, too; it's more institutionalized, mandated by the government.

I write all that to make the point that the book contains a lot of material for future plot devices, so in the right hands, it could make a good series. I hope they stay away from the politics as much as possible, because, for me, the real questions the story asks are, what would we do differently if this generation were the last? What would we do if we knew that we were leaving our youngest ones to die alone? How would we prepare them for that eventuality, especially if they did not care to learn anything? And more importantly, what's the point? Maybe it is best if we all just cease to exist simultaneously, to avoid leaving anyone alone. If so, who gets to make that decision for everyone?

4. Funny the book is supposed to be futuristic when in our world there are millions of pet freaks who treat them as though there were no more children in the world. Sad there are many who get nothing. Sounds scarier than Children of Men. I loved the movie, if it's an interesting plot, bring the t.v. on. I agree Sci-fi is stingy as hell...could mess it up. They should try HBO instead.

6. Watch BSG!!! Seriously, it's the best show on television, and people would rather watch crap like American Idol. It's appalling.

I'll watch this Children of Men show. The movie was enjoyable, and I trust Eick to do a good job. I even gave The Bionic Woman a fair chance, but there was just too much wrong with it. Hopefully he's learned from his mistakes.

7. My autographed copy of the novel is vibrating with anticipation! As someone mentioned above the book and the movie are quite different animals, and I liked good chunks of both. The major thematic difference to me is what occurred between the publishing or the book and the release of the film...namely 9/11. The book had a gentle resignation to it, while the film was definitely up in your face. Either way, I thought both worlds were richly imagined, and I can see the possibilities--even on SciFi!!

9. While I too proselytize BSG's greatness (Hark! It returns after nearly a year off the air NEXT WEEK!), we would be foolish to give Eick too much credit. BSG is Ron Moore's baby. Eick is a business man, not a writer really. His track record is spotty at best (Bionic Woman, Xena). If only RDM were in control of the CoM....
