Golden Globe Nominations: So, What Do You Think?

The Golden Globe nominations were released this morning, and I take it you first read all about it right here on Cinematical, right? Because you love us, right? Anyway, there weren't any major surprises to be found. I'm happy to see The Simpsons Movie land a nod for best animated feature, and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story came away with two nods ... which should help bolster its box office take. Same goes for the other films on the list that still haven't arrived in theaters; most notably Sweeney Todd, The Great Debaters, There Will be Blood and Charlie Wilson's War. Thankfully, Amy Ryan was thrown a bone for her excellent supporting performance in Gone Baby Gone (though the film as a whole was missing from the other, larger categories) and -- whaddya know -- Juno got a whole lotta love.
Atonement looks to be this year's "Best Film That No One Will See," while it almost sickens me to see John Travolta (for his drag performance in Hairspray) listed in the same category as Javier Bardem (for No Country for Old Men). The best motion picture drama category features a whopping seven films, though Michael Clayton and The Great Debaters probably could've been left off. Shockers? How about Don Cheadle coming away empty following his terrific performance in Talk to Me? Personally, and I know a lot of people will argue against this, I thought Joaquin Phoenix in Reservation Road was better than Viggo Mortenson in Eastern Promises. How many lines did Viggo actually have in that film? Seven? I imagine Across the Universe hypnotized people into believing it belonged in the best motion picture (musical or comedy) category, with all its wacky colors and what not. Once is not even mentioned, well, once. And where is the nomination for Waitress? Did I miss it. Oh wait, it's not there. But Cate Blanchett is there -- twice -- for both I'm Not There and Elizabeth: The Golden Age. You're telling me both Hairspray and Across the Universe were better than Waitress? And where's Zodiac? Do you agree with this? Should we write a letter?

3. I'm pissed that Once got no nominations. I thought it would at least be a shoo-in for best original song. Hopefully the Academy recognizes it so we can actually watch some good music for once during the ceremony.

4. Wow. No nominations for "Once"? It was original, uncontrived and it got so many raves! That's unfortunate, especially when "Across the Universe" was big on cheese and it was a complete spin-off of Beatles songs. Maybe the panel just forgot about "Once" because its release wasn't as recent!

6. I don't know how you can leave off 3:10 to Yuma. The performances by Bale and Crowe were fantastic, and it was my favorite picture of the year.

7. I would have liked to have seen "Once" "Into The Wild" and "Zodiac" nominated for major awards. Travolta over Hal Holbrook is criminal. Also, Assassination of Jesse James should have received greater recognition, particularly in the directing and screenwriting categories.
Also, too bad that Brolin wasn't nominated for "No Country", but seeing as how his was also a supporting role (arguably), I can understand why two actors from the same film were not nominated in the same category.
I don't like that Blanchett has become the award-proxy for "I'm Not There"..... that film has so much going for it, but its an ensemble piece, and hugely ambitious, and I think voters don't know what to do with it (Blanchett is deserving though).

8. I have to disagree with you about Viggo Mortensen. He totally deserves a nomination. I had always been on the fence about him and his films, but Eastern Promises was so good, and his performance was so fantastic, that I was won over. The guy did his homework, his accent was, I'd dare say, perfect. He really put himself out there especially with the steam bath scene. He may not have had a lot of lines but his presence made the film.

9. i think "Knocked Up" should be on for best comedy and what about John Cusack for his performance in "Grace is Gone" i think Wes Anderson's screenplay for "The Darjeeling Limited" could have been nominated. Also Adam Sandler's performance in "Reign Over Me" was great. What about "Waitress" the movie was great and Kerri Russell was great.
I think Seth Rogen could have been nominated for "Best Performance in a Comedy" he was great in "Knocked Up" and so was Katherine Heigl.
What about "Gone Baby Gone" Casey Affleck was great in the film and so were Ed Harris and Morgan Freeman. There are some people who should even be nominated.

10. You guys are forgetting that the Globes are even more of a popularity contest than the Oscars-- it's all about Hollywood glory. So... no Don Cheadle (no one saw that movie) and no "once" because it's not cool to the celeb suckups in the press.

12. Why wasn't Persepolis nominated for best animated feature? The category should be for best animated films, not best animated kids' films as the trend has been for much too long.

13. Thank you Brian F., your a wise guy. Don Cheadle desserved at least nod for his performance in "Talk To Me". I bet if it was George Clooney, or, Brad Pitt sprayed painted black like Angelina Jolie, then it would have gotten all the oscar attention. This stupid award season is just a popularity contest. I mean "Across The Universe" over "Talk to Me", or, "Once"??? Are you fucking kidding me??? Also, John C. Riley over Don Cheadle??? That's BS.

14. I thought that Viggo Mortensen's performance in "Eastern Promise" was stunning. Anyone can chew scenery, but Viggo has mastered understatement and nuance to perfection. He was sadly overlooked in "A History of Violence," and I am delighted that his extraordinary talent is finally being recognized.

17. For television, hopefully the golden globes will get it right again and choose Hugh Laurie for Best Actor in a drama series, but what a snub for Don Cheadle not receiving a nomination. I hope at least that the members of the academy will remember him with an oscar nod come oscar time.

1. We could write a letter but do you think anybody would care or listen? It's disheartening that I don't see great lil films like "Waitress" and "Once" get little award recognition here in the states. Disheartening but not surprising. The Globes acting categories have always baffled me. Like the Musical or Comedy choices.....huh? Why group those. The only plus is that at least more films get recognition yet too often they aren't the right films. Ah well.
